Alex Komodore is a Denver-based virtuoso guitarist. His powerful interpretations,
formidable technique, and natural musicianship have won unanimous praise from prominent
international critics, audiences, and many of the world’s finest guitarists. He has judged in many
of the world’s most prestigious Guitar Festivals and Competitions, including the Portland
International Guitar Competition, the Denver International Guitar Competition, the Greater
Victoria Performing Arts Festival, and the Guitar Foundation of America International Guitar
Competitions. This June Komodore will host the largest guitar festival in the World – the Guitar
Foundation of America Convention and 3 International competitions -to be held at
Metropolitan State University of Denver on the Downtown Auraria Campus.
Komodore began his studies of the classical guitar at the age of 8 in his native New York
City, performing in New York City’s Town Hall at the age of 11, The United Nations at 19, and
performed on National Television for PBS at the age of 25. A dedicated teacher and University
professor for over 45 years, he has been invited to teach at many international conservatories.
Recent performances and teaching assignments have taken him across the United States,
Canada, Scotland, France, Portugal, Greece, Turkey and the Dominican Republic. This Spring he
will teach Masterclasses at many Universities and Music Schools across the US. Several of his
students have recently won important prizes in prominent guitar competitions including the
Guitar Foundation of America, Domaine Forget de Charlevoix, Philadelphia, Louisville ,and the
Koblenz International Guitar Festival.
An extremely versatile musician, he has performed extensively with classical, steel
string, electric and Hawaiian slide guitars, and also has performed on theorbo, mandolin, and
tenor banjo as a soloist with many of the finest orchestras, Opera companies, and chamber
groups across the U.S. His Discography includes recordings on 16 CD’s, including the Delos and
Folk Era labels. His 1989 CD Redstone with flutist Rod Garnett earned the coveted “Best
of Westword” best classical recording of 1990. His 1994 solo debut recording Passport won
praises from several of the world’s most prominent guitarists, including David Russell,
Christopher Parkening and Sharon Isbin.
Komodore is an avid distance runner, participating in 15 marathons including the NYC
marathon and is a 3-time Boston Marathon qualifier. He loves ocean swimming and surfing,
biking, skiing, cooking and spending time with his wife Debra and their 3 children.
